A new way to help kids discover the satisfaction of making a difference

First let me say I can't believe I've never found this site until now. My name is Julian Mather from Brisbane, Australia.

I am currently launching the THUMB Program which aims to create a generational shift in thinking by getting primary students to understand they already have the capacity to make a positive difference to the lives of others, and rather than waiting until the end of their lives, they can start doing it

We Care about Haiti

Our first graders are showing that they are compassionate, caring young people - concerned about others on the planet. They have written and drawn pictures about the earthquake in Haiti, hoping someone else will hear their words and want to help in their own way.

A Simple Way for Schools to Raise Funds for Haiti

Mrs. Halloran is a teacher my mom knows. Adam Corry is her colleague. Hats for Haiti is something he is doing with his students, but he would like lots of people to participate. I hope you will!

Here is some information taken from my mom's blog:

I received an email this weekend that put a smile on my face, and since I was asked to pass along, I thought I’d blog about it here. A timely post and invitation for today–

Emmett Belknap Middle School teacher, Adam Corry, is inviting other sch… Continue

An Opportunity to Help Those In Need

Before getting into the main points of this post, I'd like to send my heartfelt thoughts and prayers to everyone affected by the tragedy currently taking place in Haiti. There are no words to express the emotions that I feel as I watch, read, and listen to reports that are coming from the devastated regions.

I spend a significant amount of time in class talking to my students about how it's important for them to think outside of themselves and strive to become global-minded citizens. We discuss… Continue

31 Wonderful Members, 31 Wonderful Poems

Let me begin my saying that I find myself completely overwhelmed both professionally and socially at this time of the year. I know that I am not alone in this. I simply wanted to take a moment and invite any member of Working Together 2 Make a Difference that hasn’t yet taken a look at the GPP to drop in and say hello. Perhaps you’ve got a poem that you would like to share with the group or you would like to comment on someone’s work. Feel free to stop in and join us in our quest to raise cultur… Continue

First Graders Feeding the Hungry

Can First Graders work to make a difference? I've seen it! In our school (50% free/reduced lunch population), my 20 first graders overwhelmed the Deck the Halls for the Hungry project at our school.

How did this happen? Just a few sentences a day about caring for our friends. Almost every single student donated cans and boxes of nonperishable items for the local food pantry.

Amazing! Check out the blog post here for pictures!… Continue

A 6 Year Old's Letter to Santa

The pages didn't come out in order. Scroll down to the 'Dear Santa' page, read down and then up from 'Dear Santa'. No idea why this happened. I hope you enjoy reading this as much as I did. This student is finishing Prep ( first year of school this week and has recently turned 6) This is independent writing...

How much are you willing to give up?

Hello all ...

My eighth graders and I have recently read a portion of The People of Sparks, by Jeanne DuPrau.

The selection that we read led to some discussion (well, actually HOT DEBATE - just among the small group of us) about exactly who we consider to be part of our own "community" and how far we should extend our help to those less fortunate than ourselves.

Being part of a global community, I am interested in multiple viewpoints to some of the questions we generated and discussed as a sm… Continue

Student Reflection on our 25 Days to Make a Difference Program

This is a post that was submitted by Daniel, one of my grade 5 students. The students have been challenged to write about their efforts to do at least one good deed per day, but Daniel took it a step farther and reflected on why we're doing this in the first place.

The Reason I Think We are doing 25 Days to Make a Difference

I think we are doing this to show that little things make a huge difference at home, at school, in your community and globally. If you do things like set the table for din… Continue

Is this about Alden? It is so beautiful and honest and sad. It makes me ashamed. I never even stopped to find out who she was. This is a poem that really is people helping people- thanks for helping me think about it honestly.
