An Army of Bystanders
If the battle cry is given,
and the drums of war begin,
would you fight to save the peaceful,
or let the grief sink in?
Would you stand for all you know,
if the price became to steep?
Or would you swallow all your worries,
and hope to hell they leave?
If the numbers reached a million,
and your efforts did fall shy,
would you run and flee your problems?
Or would you stand with head held high?
When the troubles become great,
and you've lost your will to fight,
Stand your ground with peace-filled mind,
and that alone shall be your light.

Hi Stephanie,
I really like the rhyme scheme in this poem. It reminds me of some of the poetry of a man called William Butler Yeats. He wrote in the same style and his poems often dealt with weighty issues, as yours does. This poem makes me consider the difference between what I would like to think I would do in a difficult situation and what I would actually do.

I love the second stanza. While standing for and hoping for are both essential at different times, it all boils down to being proactive or reactive. This poem has captured a universal human instance. The direct address left me feeling uncomfortable as I pondered what my answer might be and we are often uncomfortable about what isn’t certain.

When Mr. Currin read this in class and said it was by a student named Steffanie, I so didn't piece it together. This is wonderful! I really thought it came from one of Mr. Currin's poetry books. I love the rhyme scheme and flow, but the meaning you can get from is even more beautiful. I wish I could come up with something equal to this. Great Job.

Today I made a difference by helping my dad with the new garage door opener he had to install. Together we turned a 4 hour job into a 2 hour job. I felt great after helping.
