I haven't read this yet, but I'm longing to. Kris--I recently saw Firoozeh Dumas, the author of Funny in Farsi, speak. She was brilliant and witty and very funny. I bought her book--short vignettes about growing up Iranian in America. If you would...

Building Community

Establishing a new online community is an exciting venture. We've been happy and comfortable watching activity begin to bubble up in small but meaningful ways here and eager for this to evolve as a true community that isn't really led by any one person. This is a learning experience for all of us. Discovering how to engage purposefully with one another is a big part of that learning.

Sometimes, when we are new to engaging in online spaces, we aren't sure what the expectations are or how to part… Continue

The Global Poetry Project Evolves

When Rob Currin contacted me a few weeks back eager to begin connecting himself and his students to a global community of writers, my first thought was to send him this way. I first met Rob in a workshop that I was leading around establishing personal learning networks almost a year ago. I was inspired by his enthusiasm and his energy, and it's been an honor to support him as he's begun this work in various ways. We've been collaborating around how he might align the work of his Global Poetry Pr… Continue

Need Help Organizing Fundraiser

Hi all--quick question for you: has anyone here ever led or participated in a fundraiser to provide relief to a family in need due to natural disaster or unexpected tragedy? One of our closest friends suffered the loss of both of her parents last week. They were killed during a home invasion. The family is now facing a mountain of unexpected expenses and a long legal battle. I would like to establish a fund and a donations process that can help them out, but I want to make sure I do this effecti… Continue

Considering the Work That We Ask Students to Pursue

In my work with teachers and kids this year, so much of what we are discussing has everything to do with the pursuit of meaningful essential questions and the creation of real products. I'm realizing that it's possible that all great learning truly IS service learning. If we are asking our students to pursue essential questions and create things that can be of use to others in this world, then their learning comes to make a difference in this way. Incorporating service learning within a curricul… Continue

A Great Resource for Helping Students Find and Use Their Voices

I'm not sure if some of you saw already, but Sylvia Martinez's latest post and attached article provides some compelling perspective and strategies for those who are eager to welcome students into the conversations that unfold within the field and beyond it. Her focus is on student presenters and conferences, but the points that she makes apply in so many other settings. For exa… Continue

Thanks, Angela! I look forward to learning about what everyone is up in the classrooms and especially in terms of 'making a difference'.

To add to what I just wrote Angela I am keen to see also if I can work with other TL's anywhere and develop ideas to use our skills--I am not sure how yet but maybe through discussion we could come up with ideas. I remember listening or reading one of Will Richardson's podcasts where he talked about a the power of one person to make a difference. I was impressed with his passion for connecting and the importance of this for all of us. This ning represents for me another way of making connections.

Thanks Angela. I am interested in connecting with other Teacher Librarians (if possible) to discuss ways we can improve our role in schools.

Hey ....

Erin and I do a service portion at the end of our unit in the spring "Man's Inhumanity to Man" and challenge kids to find ways to give back and to make a difference in the lives of people in the community ... last year we discussed how one small deed can leave a "positive fingerprint" on their heart ... and that may brighten their whole day sending that fingerprint in thousands of different unknown directions ....

I hope that we will begin this project MUCH earlier so that the kids can continue to serve and go beyond this small project to bigger and better things!

I'll keep you posted!

Hi Angela, thanks for the warm welcome! Sorry for the delayed reply -- I've been swamped. I'm currently at UNIS Hanoi in Vietnam, and have been working in MYP Schools for 8 years. I love the idea of Service learning. It's also a core component of MYP and sometimes is an area where schools and students struggle to make the learning authentic. It's great to see social spaces popping up like this. :)

Thanks Kristen for that idea. I haven't read the book although I have it in the Library. I will now read it and add it to either my Book Club or my Year 7 reading program. Linking the text into action on issues of social justice is a great idea.
