I really like this idea Anita. As we have brainstormed ideas to expand our introductory community service programme beyond help around the home and neighbourhood, world vision fundraising and daffodil day, the idea of doing something for Perth's h...

That is a really cool idea Anita. I have asked a sent out a bulk email to all the teachers at our school to give your idea a try. Fingers crossed they take it up. But if one does, then mission accomplished I imagine, as around 30 humans will be an...

I just love this idea. The visual imagery is a powerful tool for young children and I'm sure it would be equally effective for older ones too. I hope others are inspired by your efforts and try this in their schools too. Jenny : )

What a great idea. I agree we often have free dress days where the children donate a gold coin and that's it. With my young children seeing the cans of soup would make it real. We do a toy drive in our next inquiry and donate them personally to th...

What a great idea. I love the way you have visually represented this so that the students understand what gtheir contribution means. What a lovely school you must work in Anita. : )

The podcast is great, Mike! It's a fantastic way to present the information about what the children have learnt. I bet they loved listening to it!! We're looking at energy efficiency in our class so I'm going to show our class the Light Up the Wor...

Thank you so much for the comments. It was funny, Mike, I couldn't work out who my Star Sprinkler was and I wanted to change the rules then!! (but didn't!) The children really seemed to enjoy the secretive aspect of the activity. I love your ideas...

I love it. Exactly the kind of easy to implement activity that models so well the power of kindness. I used to run something like this for staff at a previous school. We had a weekly staff morning tea where we would run raffles and award prizes to...

The bags look fantastic. You'd have to be happy going shopping with one of those and you're doing a good turn for the environment at the same time. Let your students know that I think they've done a great job. I hope some of the other members of t...

Thanks for joining us here Anita. It sounds like you're in a school where service learning projects are adopted by your community. I hope you can get inspired by the efforts of others and will inspire us further by continuing to post about what it is you are doing. Take a look around and see if there are any connections you can make with projects being undertaken by other members of the ning. Good to have you here. : )

Making it real

Often in schools we have a casual clothes day and bring in a gold coin donation which is given to a variety of charities. At Star of the Sea School, we recently had a can drive where every child in the school bought in a can of soup which was then donated to a local homeless shelter. To make this giving more real, we had a small ceremony where children sang “Heal The World”. Then each child respectfully brought up their can and placed it in a large heart shape while reflective music was playing.… Continue

Star Sprinklers

Can you do something kind for someone else from the bottom of your heart without expecting anything in return? If you said yes, congratulations! You're a Star Sprinkler. Our Year 3 class have been challenging ourselves to spread kindness in our school. We started by choosing one person's name out of a hat. We then spent 2 days being kind to that person without letting them know who it was. Some people wrote kind notes such as "Hope you have a great day, from your star sprinkler". Others brought… Continue

School Enviro Bags

South Australia have brought in a law to abolish all plastic bags, commencing on the 4th of May. To coincide with this date, our school have run a competition to design a logo for an Enviro Shopping Bag using this years Sea Week Theme "A Climate of Change". Every student in the school designed an entry as a part of our Science program. We had 2 winners: one for Years R-4 and one for Years 5-7. Each child will be able to take home one of the winning entries and they look amazing.… Continue

I discovered the Charter for Compassion this weekend too when they sent me an email encouraging me to tweet about their project's aims. I did this. Here's the link for the Australian vieo that was compiled to support their cause; http://bit.ly/3yKfZJ

Angela, your post is very helpful to me at this point. I am spending a great deal of time with my students talking about non-negotiables such as respect, citizenship, and cooperation. We are making progress, but I have been looking for something e...

That is the plan. Being aware they have an audience beyond the classroom should become a positive for them. Some of my Year 10 students were discussing a personal blog set up by one of them this morning. They were distracted from their assignment ...

I love the last line. Shakespeare often wrote about immortalization through verse in his sonnets and this is what I am reminded of in the last stanza. The Global Poetry Project has just welcomed another genius. Please continue to share your poetry...

Hi Stephanie, I really like the rhyme scheme in this poem. It reminds me of some of the poetry of a man called William Butler Yeats. He wrote in the same style and his poems often dealt with weighty issues, as yours does. This poem makes me consi...
