Hello Aram, it's great to have you here with us! Geographically I think that you are the closest person to me on this Ning (I'm in Sault, Ontario). I really like how you say that you want your students to feel a part of their community rather than apart from their community. I feel the same way! I have my students involved in a Making A Difference program, similar to what you have with your "Giving Option" program. I admire what you are doing Aram, please let me know if I can assist you in any way!

Thank you so much for providing us with this picture of you and the work you do with students Aram. You sound like just the kind of teacher we need here. There are others like you here, who share the same thought processes and want to pass on the sense to the students we teach, that doing good for others is part of being human and belonging to a community. I am looking forward to seeing the connections that can be formed in this space amongst the educators and students here. : )

Hi Aram. Welcome to our ning. Can you let us know a little more about yourself and what is is you might be thinking of doing to make a difference in your community with the students you teach (are you a teacher??). You should take a look at some of the work being done by others here to see if you can gain some inspiration.
Cheers,
Jenny.

A little bit about me

I teach 7th grade Language Arts classes and a Journalism class at MacDonald Middle School in East Lansing, Michigan, USA. This will be my 18th year teaching and I've spent about half of it teaching Language Arts at the middle school and high school levels and half of it teaching Special Education classes --- smaller classes of students with needs in reading, writing, and math. I love sharing my enjoyment of reading, writing, and using technology with students.

Here are a couple other places you can find me online:
* My blog
* My school website

I read about Laura in an article by Will Richardson, then read her blog, and found my way here. Laura has a gift for bringing people together, it seems, and this ning is a wonderful extension of what she started. My involvement in community service has mostly been connected to my church in the past (walking in Crop Walks, traveling to South Dakota to work with the Lakota at Re-Member...), but I've offered students the option of doing community service in my classes; it's been one of the only ways students can get extra credit in my classes.

I call it the Giving Option. They do some volunteer work in the community, write it up, get their parent to sign it, and turn it in. The volunteer work can be anything they don't get paid for: from raking the neighbor's leaves to walking or running in a 5K for a good cause to cleaning a park with their Boy Scout or Girl Scout troop... My hope is that volunteering gets them in the habit of being generous and feeling a part of their community (as opposed to apart from their community).

I'm looking for more ways to get my students helping out in the community --- locally, nationally, and internationally --- and learning about (and working with) people outside of our area. This ning seems like a great way for me to facilitate that work.

What I love about our set up is that it allows for direct questions to the poet. Please walk me through the creation of this poem.

Encouraging them to share their reflections here is a powerful way to expand your sphere of influence and theirs as well. I can't wait to learn more about what they are thinking and how they are growing. This is the sort of writing that provokes c...

These simple things make everyone's day a bit brighter and the load that they carry a bit lighter. It also means the world to us when someone shows that they care enough to help. This is inspiring, Erik. I hope you will continue sharing here!
