Grant, This sounds fantastic. No wonder the kids are excited. What a wonderful way to teach them about inclusiveness and understanding of others. I am looking forward to the pictures. I hope you can get your local paper involved and show the kids ...

Best of luck with the star sprinklers idea Grant. It's wonderful to see people picking up on the ideas of others and running with them. Let us know how things go. I'm eager to hear. : )

Hi Grant,

Now you need to see how you can link your curriculum focus to ideas for making a difference.

Preps - can they do something in the community to make a difference for others. Perhaps it could begin with doing something at home? Photos of their efforts could be shared here.
Grade ones ; could they create a habitat in the school grounds to encourage minibeasts to thrive? They could use voicethread to record their efforts and share the voicethread link here.
Grade Twos - Can they visit or be visited by a local veterinary clinic that assists injured wildlife? They could then do some fundraising to support that organisation and share their efforts in a blog post here.
Grade threes - Citizenship ceremony sounds great. They could record the stories of some of the participants using photostory 3 and embed the movies they have created here.
Grade fours - Can they identify something that needs attention in the local community and create a Photostory 3 movie that they could present to their local member to lobby for action. The movie could be shared here.
Grade fives - Can they do something to assist in making changes at home to their eating or exercise patterns? They could create a wiki where each student contributes their experiences over the course of a few weeks. The link could be shared here for others to access.
Grade Sixes - Could create a wiki where they share their findings. The link could be shared here so that others could access it. It becomes a resource for everyone to use.

These are just ideas Grant. You need to provide the leadership to bring your staff with you and allow them to see how powerful sharing what they are doing can be. If you have any questions send me a message.

Good luck. We are here to help if you need it.

I have been planning with all our levels this week.
The Preps - Are continuing to look at community helpers
The Ones have gone old school with Mini-beasts, but can't work out where to take it in the end.
The Twos are looking at habitats and animals
Grade 3's to conduct a Citizenship Ceremony in September of this year. But we have to get the OK from the Department of Immigration. Fingers crossed we can do something with that, if not we will have an affirmation ceremony instead.
The Fours are looking at Democracy and our system/levels of government.
The Fives are exploring health
The Sixes are examining conflict and how it shapes identity and culture.

Am happy to collaborate or be pointed in the right direction for action

Citizenship

I have been working with our Grade Three teachers on a unit called Proud to be Australian. Our core understandings are...
1.Being a citizen of Australia is a privilege
2.Our duty as citizens is to welcome others into our lives
3.Celebrations are an important way to acknowledge special events
4.There is a process to organising celebrations and events

The action component of this is to organise a real citizenship ceremony at our school.

The children brainstormed who we would need to contact, see… Continue
