Our response to Victorian Bushfire Tragedy

School wide fundraiser

School wide fundraiser Our State of Victoria has been marred by tragedy this past weekend. Temperatures of 46 degrees celcius and fierce northerly winds led to firestorm conditions. Parts of country Victoria have been ravaged and there has been a huge loss of life. To date there have been 173 recorded deaths with the possibility that this figure could rise to numbers in the 200's.

As a school community, Toorak College is responding with a school wide fundraiser this Thursday. A special assembly will be held to allow our students to reflect and extend their sympathy to communities who are suffering. Australia is rallying behind those affected with fundraising efforts springing up everywhere. I will post the results of our school's efforts when a final tally is available.

Pictures detailing the extent of the fire can be seen here. Please note there is an image of a deceased horse that would not be suitable for younger children. It doesn't open by itself, you need to click a link to have it open so it won't unnecessarily disturb you.

I discovered the Charter for Compassion this weekend too when they sent me an email encouraging me to tweet about their project's aims. I did this. Here's the link for the Australian vieo that was compiled to support their cause; http://bit.ly/3yKfZJ

Sleepout for Schools

We had a great meeting with some of our Yr 9 students yesterday to see if there was enough interest to get a fundraising activity organised to support Daraja Academy in Kenya (see Mark Lukach's page here and blog posts as well as Jabiz Raisdana's) and the Bal Ashram in India.

Well support there is! Our students were enthusiastic and buzzing with ideas. What they've decided to do is… Continue

Building Bridges - supporting girl's education in Kenya and India

Tomorrow, we are going to be encouraging our Yr 9 students to get involved in a service learning project to help out two very worthy causes. One of these is an idea to assist the Bal Ashram in India. They are wanting to build a girl's school to provide education for girls who have been resued from child slavery. Our school visits the Bal Ashram's boy's school on trips to India and feel a strong desire to give back.

The other cause is… Continue

Yes, I'm leaving for Australia tomorrow (Thursday here). I'll be in Sydney for a few days, and I'm spending the remainder of my time in Wagga Wagga. I'm told that my host family is planning on taking me to the Melbourne Cup Race!

Thanks for the wonderfullly warm welcome, Jenny. It is lovely to see such collegial support!!
I am a primary teacher (Year One for the last 5 years, but have taught Prep to Year 7 in 2 Australian states as well as UK and France). I am very interested in developing engaging and fun integrated units for young children that really incorporate not only the core subjects, but ICT, design and technology and pastoral care - and I'm particularly keen for my young students (5-7) to experience real projects that make a difference. This year our class garden was planned, prepared and planted by our children, cared for over the course of a semester then all plants were potted for a huge 3 Day Plant Sale during lunchtimes. We raised $154 for our local Abused Child Trust charity - but much more than that - the children learned so much about teamwork and the joy of helping those in need as well as the myriad of learning opportunities in the subject areas throughout the 'In the Garden' unit. For example, they observed and measured plant growth (Maths), created stories from the viewpoint of a garden insect (Literacy) and created 3D plant lifecycles (Science). There is so much overcrowding of the curriculum, so little time to do everything we want to, that I think we need to be really smart about the way we approach planning opportunitiies for our students. What I'd like to do, is increase the profile of ICT and invovlement in service projects within my units. This seems the perfect place to get more ideas!

Thanks Jenny
I have tried to share some practical suggestions about ways that we teachers can work with kids to make a difference but my blogs are not being accepted by the system.
