Gosh, Amber you have real talent. I really enjoyed reading your poem because I had to 'think' about the message and the writer's intention. I think I get it. Keep writing, as there really does need to be more poets in the world. And... I agree the...

Ok, no reason why my 5&6 year olds can't contribute. I'll start the ball rolling at school and see what they come up with. I'm always amazed by there understanding and ability to create from their own perspective.

Socio-economic access to toys.

Prep Students are only limited by the limits put on them by others. Young children can do amazing things as long as they clearly understand what they have to do!

Our current Inquiry is Toy Story.

The Central Idea is:
Toys have changed over time due to technology.

The lines of inquiry that will define the scope of the inquiry into the central idea is:
-Technology has changed toys over time.
-Toys are made from a variety of material and in different ways.
-Socio-econ… Continue

5 and 6 Year Olds Discuss: What is a good leader and what do they do?

Today we had a discussion in my classroom: What is a good leader and what do they do?
I teach 5 & 6 year olds, and I’m always surprised by their answers. I always record their thoughts for reflection and revisiting. The following answers are written as said by my students.

A good leader is;
not bossy
and doesn’t have to be your friend
organisers the pencils
plays with everyone
is a good friend
doesn’t exclude
doesn’t give the answers
helps others to find out what they need to find out

Global Students, International Mindedness, What the ‘ning’ is that?

This is a copy of my latest post on my blog - http://ninadavis.wordpress.com/

Today reaffirmed why I love teaching and why this generation of children are special. My preps (1st year of school in Australia- 5 year olds) joined a year 5/6 grade (11-12 year old students) to look at the ‘ning’, Working Together 2 Make A Difference. They are now familiar with ‘nings’ and their relationships with older students are developing. I must also say it was a pleasure to watch these older students pair up w… Continue

Hi Nina.

Thanks for the welcome. I hope I do get a lot of this group. I did read your post about the toys. They raised a good amount of money!! Great to see even the young people raise money for charity.

It's not just about the garbage cans, that's for certain. I don't mind doing things anonymously. It's fun, really. But it sometimes seems...well...like it's not really making a difference in a world so dark. Basically, I think it comes down to me needing to put back on the blinders and carry on forward with my deeds regardless of my perception of my community.

Thank you, Nina! I just saw the friend request when I was going over the different Nings I belong to! I don't know how long it's been "sitting" there! Also, I LOVE the "Lost Generation" video you've posted--I've used it in several workshops with teachers. Right now, I do staff development with teachers mainly around instructional technology and curriculum mapping and I keep a blog at http://digigogy.blogspot.com which I'll be expanding over the summer. (Winter for you?) Nice to virtually meet you!

Hi Nina. You have probably read that I am at Mount Eliza North Primary School but you may not know that I have just started the role of IB cordinator. Our Prin and I am about to go to China to do the Pedagogical Leadership course. I am wondering which school you are at and whether or not it is an IB school. I am thinking you may be at Toorak College. Thanks for joining my network. I am not really sure how I can make the most of this site

Hi Nina,
It is fantastic to hear of your students interest in Daraja Academy and of their development through inquiry - what a wonderful collection of words/phrases.
At school today we had around 25 students attend a meeting at lunchtime to become part of the Global Girl Action Group, addressing the issue of ‘Child Slavery’ and ‘Education for all’ with the focus on girls education and the two girls schools, ‘Balika Ashram’ in India and ‘Daraja’ in Kenya.
The girls suggested raising money and awareness through a 'school sleepover'. This was taken on very enthusiastically by the rest of the girls so we are hoping we will be able to run with this event. The date for the sleepover would be Friday 22nd May, 2009. Year 9 will organise the event, however, other levels can also get involved (hopefully other schools as well) We still need to look at the logistics of such an event. The risk assessment would be huge and would need to detail all aspects of the evening. The students aim to raise money through sponsorship and having stalls on the evening, especially with parent involvement. We are also hoping to incorporate some actiities such as dancing and inviting the African girl dancers from St John's etc etc. It is all just starting and hopefully we can get it underway before the holidays, so that the event on the 23rd is successful.

Looking forward to hearing of your developments.

Linda

Hi Nina, I've been reading the comments going back and forth between you and Wonderwoman. It sounds like today was really powerful for both you and the students. I think it's going to make an impact in your school. We need to organise the Skype session and work out a time that suits us and the time zones we are working with.
