Thankyou Letter from Fitted for Work

How nice it is to get a written 'thankyou' and this one certainly goes above and beyond! The writer linked her thanks to our school values - that's a project in itself!! This letter was to our Principal: On behalf of Fitted for Work Mornington Peninsula I would like to extend my thanks to the Toorak College community for its work in supporting the launch of the FFW service in Frankston. Fitted for Work assists disadvantaged women by providing them with free clothing to attend job interviews,Continue

Fitted For Work

Fitted for work raises funds and collects second hand clothing to train women in work and interview skills and fit them out in work attire so they can attend a job interview. It is a fantastic cause and my students got behind it in a big way. This is the script from the launch night for their new Frankston store:

Year 9s March and 'Sleep' Over against child slavery

Toorak College Year 9's organised a march into our local village and slept over at the school to raise awareness and funds for the fight against child slavery - Jenny and Linda have posted more details about these events. I was delighted to be a part of such a motivated, enthusiastic and incredibly well organised group of young women as they engaged in rowdy and meaningful collaborative action. I hope those just wanting a quiet lunch break in Mt Eliza felt the same...… Continue

Together we can...

A MASSIVE THANKYOU to our generous network of parents and businesses who are willing to put up their hand and help our students achieve their goals. Mr Robert Kusters, of Marand Precision Engineering, saw my plea for assistance in sending our old style uniforms to the Bal Ashram Indian orphanage and he sprang into action. Mr Kusters put out the request to Mark Baker of CEVA Logistics, Mr Baker extended the request to Thai Airways and, between all of us, 15 boxes went off to India and should be t… Continue

Raising funds through learning business skills.

We've held one of our fundraising events so I thought I'd give a quick update. My two Year 11 Business Management classes have had their first day of trading by running their own small businesses at school. The weather was extremely kind and the crowd was considerable. The hot chips sold out first and other ice cream food stalls had long lines for the whole of lunchtime. The goldfish stirred up some controversy and the hand made accessories attracted interest but, unfortunately, they coudln't co… Continue

Please help me to get uniforms to orphans.

Our retail uniform shop has changed management and has done a huge stocktake. Our uniform has also changed this year and so there is a lot of outdated clothing that cannot be sold. They have generously donated hundreds of items to be sent overseas to children who cannot afford school uniforms. My students and I have boxed and labelled over 20 boxes of good quality, mostly new, uniforms and taped them for posting. The school student body, meanwhile, also continues to send in their second hand un… Continue

3 classes, 3 causes, 3 collaborative projects

With three Year 11 Business Management classes at my school there are lots of opportunities for making a difference to the lives of others - These were planned late last year and, so far, we are on track: 1 class - The Shop (our student run enterprise) has begun planning stages and even held a mobile Shop at our athletics day - they will donate to Ardoch 1 class - Small Business Stalls will raise funds for the Bel Ashram and they will conduct a Mobile Muster collecting mobile phones for recyclin… Continue

OUr RAWA fund raiser and a good reason for Free Dress Fridays

International Women's Day has particular significance when working in a girls' school community. Each year, Toorak College supports RAWA - The Revolutionary Association of Women of Afghanistan. In the past we have had guest speakers including the Australian representative of this organisation and one year we were fortunate enough to have one of the education workers from Afghanistan speak at assembly. Both speakers painted a bleak picture for Afghani girls and women in relation to teenage arrang… Continue

One Day - One Event CAN can be all it takes.

After just one assembly asking for donations this letter went out to our school community announcing the results: "Dear Toorak College Community, It is with great pride that we inform you of the phenomenal results of last Thursday’s Toorak College Bushfire Appeal. As a Whole School Community we came together to support those affected by the recent bushfires by raising a staggering total of $10,245.50. Such a result is reflective of our ability to unite in times of crisis and demonstrates the… Continue

Bushfire Appeal

The girls at Toorak College and always ready and willing to help others, but especially when the need is so close to home and so many of them are personally effected by the tragedy. Our initial, whole school, fund raising effort will be a straightforward funds drive, with no accompanying free dress day or event of any kind - the girls realised themselves that a fun event would not be appropriate in this case. As leaders of the Student Representative Council, the Head and Deputy Head Girls, in c… Continue

The Project thus far...

Ok - have now attended a staff meeting on the 'what' and the 'when' and now need to put the idea to the students for the 'how'. My thinking at the moment is that I will embed this project into the curriculum wihtout too much fuss at all. Here's how I see it working: * Students make their own page where they can report on good deeds of the past, read those of others, make connections and get inspired for the good deeds to come. * I report on my page how the overall class project is going and how… Continue

Working together can make a big difference.

Excited to join a collaborative team focused on making a positive difference in the world. Others on this site are an inspiration to do what we can for society, and continually more. My plan is to involve my two Business Management classes. Students are 15 and 16 and raring to take on challenges. They still have to learn the VCE course - that's a bit of an issue - but part of our curriculum is a hands on enterprise. This has traditionally taken the form of a school based small business stall. Th… Continue
