Working together 2 make a difference

Educators working collaboratively

Often in schools we have a casual clothes day and bring in a gold coin donation which is given to a variety of charities. At Star of the Sea School, we recently had a can drive where every child in the school bought in a can of soup which was then donated to a local homeless shelter. To make this giving more real, we had a small ceremony where children sang “Heal The World”. Then each child respectfully brought up their can and placed it in a large heart shape while reflective music was playing. It was a wonderful visual and a reminder that small things can make a difference when we work together.

I really like this idea Anita. As we have brainstormed ideas to expand our introductory community service programme beyond help around the home and neighbourhood, world vision fundraising and daffodil day, the idea of doing something for Perth's homeless was raised but getting all 25 boys to the soup kitchen early morning... Taking your idea, provides a tangible action which I am sure the students would take a lot from.

I just love this idea. The visual imagery is a powerful tool for young children and I'm sure it would be equally effective for older ones too. I hope others are inspired by your efforts and try this in their schools too.

What a great idea. I agree we often have free dress days where the children donate a gold coin and that's it. With my young children seeing the cans of soup would make it real. We do a toy drive in our next inquiry and donate them personally to the Salvation Army. The Salvation Army come in and speak to the children. It really gets the message across to these very young children. Cheers Nina

The students have had some great ideas but we have struggled to get them off the ground. One that seems to be coming together is an initiative to raise awareness of the Zaidee Rainbow Foundation. This foundation encourages others to donate their o...

Hi Stephanie, I really like the rhyme scheme in this poem. It reminds me of some of the poetry of a man called William Butler Yeats. He wrote in the same style and his poems often dealt with weighty issues, as yours does. This poem makes me consi...

I completely and utterly agree with this. I see so many people who have so called "good" values and morals in life look at others as though they are the scum of the earth because they were born differently than them. It's not right that so many pe...

I really appreciate the subtle point you make about the ways in which we judge people based upon what they do or do not accomplish. People who don't finish school do lose quite a bit of status in our world, but I can think of so many people who ha...

Catherine---Wow. This is like a much needed slap in the face ; ) What a great example of how we can use poetry to make necessary statements and illuminate serious issues. Provocative.

Oh, Mrs. Leach, I love this poem. I have so felt this. I get so many customers at the pizzeria I work at who come in and share their intolerant beliefs. There was one a few weeks ago, who walked past an African American customer, and stated how he...

I am not inside your head. I can't predict what you will say. I can't control your feelings, Even if I hope you feel that way. Today you tell me one story, And tomorrow you'll tell another. How do I know what to believe, Why should I even bother?...
