Working together 2 make a difference

Educators working collaboratively

This morning I came across this great mention of service work in the comics pages.

It points out two things that I think are important about students and service work:

1. They can be super enthusiastic about the idea.
2. Over commitment can put a stop to real action taking place.

Have a super day folks!

John

Hi Mike,
Mike,

Comics have such an impact on all ages. Their ability to capture the essence of an idea or an emotion in 3 - 6 panels and usually put a smile on your face at the same time has always amazed me. Please share your students work with the rest of us once they've completed them. I'm sure they'll be amazing too!

John, I'm so glad that you posted this comic! I have introduced my students to Bitstrips, which is a comic creation tool, and I can't help but think that I have a wonderful opportunity to incorporate this into our Making A Difference program. I realize that you were posting a comic to make a point about being enthusiastic, but realistic towards service initiatives; however, your post has inspired me to use comics with my students as a means of communicating important messages about making a difference in the lives of others. Thanks for posting!

Great comic. Angela, I sympathise with you, but mostly I admire the fact that you have raised a child who thinks about others before herself. My kids are kind and caring, but could do with a bit more of the 'think of others before yourself' approach to life!

My life is a comic. Why am I not surprised? Seriously--I think someone was eavesdropping on a conversation I had with Laura last week. Only her hair isn't red and mine is substantially thinner. I recognize those bags under the mother's eyes though. Heh.

I was wondering if that was the word being used there! That's such a tough word for kids of that age--what a great example of how our use of language helps them adopt it earlier than they might. I just had this conversation with a teacher last week.…

Wow! I think I need to take some time to absorb how selfless this young child is. This is truly one of the most spectacular and inspirational pieces of writing that I have ever seen from a young student, especially a 6 year old! Thanks for sharing t…

Carolyn, this is an incredible story that I will be sharing with my students tomorrow! A food drive is a concept that students of all ages can understand and connect to, so it's a wonderful idea as an in-school service project. Congratulations to yo…
